Our Story

Our nurseries are run and managed by its owners, myself (Lydia Browning) and Paul Browning. I am the area manager and Paul helps me with the day to day running of the business and is also our handy man.

We have two children, Lola-Belle and James who are both growing up now.

Before opening Smarty Pants I had always been a nursery nurse from the minute I left school. I have worked in various day nurseries, on the children’s ward at Russell’s Hall Hospital and at Alexandra High School where I worked with children with additional needs and gained a qualification teaching nursery nursing to the sixth formers.

Myself and many of the managers have gained a Degree in Early Years.

We are proud to a few staff still with us from the very start and also many staff awarded 10 and 15 years service, we appreciate all their dedication and loyalty.

We have very experienced and professional managers who run every nursery and I am very hands on, visiting regularly.

Our History

smarty pants building tipton

In April 2006 Paul and I noticed Smarty Pants for sale and made an appointment to view the 4 bedroomed house and barber shop. We felt it was perfect for a nursery and applied to Sandwell council for planning permission to change the business use.

Once we were approved we arranged the mortgage and got the keys in February 2007. We then spent 6 months converting the building and opened on 03/09/2007. We quickly became very busy with more than 150 children on our waiting list, this is why we decided to open Lola-Belle’s on 03/09/2009, exactly 2 years to the day after Smarty Pants.

Lola-Belle’s is named after our daughter and is only 1 mile from Smarty Pants.

Smarty Pants @ Lightwoods House opened on 03/09/2017, 10 years after the first one. With this one I was honoured to win a tender with Sandwell Council out of many other established nurseries who applied. They chose me to operate a nursery where they had just spent 5.4 million pounds (with Lottery Heritage fund and Sandwell Council) to refurbish the building and build our nursery to look like a replica of the old stables. It is a very special place with the park and Shakespeare garden for their wedding venue.

We also operated Smarty Pants @ Lye for 9 years with Dudley Council from 2017-2026, this nursery now continues to thrive with their new owner.

Our final nursery is located in Pattingham, in a beautiful countryside environment that we opened on 03/09/2024, 17 years after the first.
I am so proud of the nurseries and the number of years we have now been established.

Please come and see what we have created, we always welcome everyone to come and have a look around at any time.
